Abstract

Background: Intrusion of maxillary incisors with anterior mini-implants has been reported to produce absolute intrusion with minimum proclination of incisors. There is very limited scientific evidence about the efficacy of intrusion mechanics with one versus two mini-implant-assisted intrusion. Objectives: The primary and secondary objectives of this trial was to investigate the effect of one versus two mini-implants on the amount of incisor intrusion and changes in the axial inclinations of maxillary incisors. Setting and Design: Single-center, Parallel arm, Prospective Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial Methods: Sixty, male and female subjects (20-30 years of age) requiring correction of deep bite or gummy smile were divided equally into Group 1 & 2. One mini-implant was placed between maxillary central incisors in group 1 & two mini-implants were placed between maxillary lateral and canine bilaterally in group 2. Incisor intrusion and axial inclination were measured from lateral cephalograms before and 4 months after intrusion. A force of 80 gm was applied from the min-implant to the archwire with an elastomeric chain in both groups. Data was analysed by independent‘t’ test. Results: The mean amount of incisor intrusion was significantly greater (p<0.05) in group-2 (3.81mm) as compared to group-1 (2.61mm) whereas the mean amount of incisor proclination observed was significantly more(p<0.05) in group-1 (1.970) Conclusion: Both the methods for maxillary incisor intrusion were effective but two mini-implants assisted intrusion can be preferred as this method produces more amount of incisor intrusion with minimum proclination of maxillary incisors.
