The purpose of this extensively researched and well-written textbook by one of South Asia's foremost authorities on holistic management of Cleft Deformities is to introduce its various facets right from embryology to management at different ages to rehabilitation and counselling. An endearing feature of the textbook by Prof. O.P. Kharbanda are the real life case reports.
The introductory section is devoted towards nomenclature, pre-natal development of cleft deformities, epidemiology and the various classification systems. Section two highlights the standards of cleft care. Sections three to seven describe the various methods employed by the clinical orthodontist for the management of individuals with cleft deformities right from immediate post-natal care through adulthood. Of particular interest is chapter 19, which teaches the guidelines of record taking, an aspect never described in a textbook before. The chapters on strategies for both orthognathic surgery & distraction osteogenesis as well as the orthodontics to plan them is also exhaustive and very well-written. The chapters on speech and ENT issues are so succinctly elucidated.
The textbook is upto date with chapters on the use of three-dimensional imaging and 3D printing in pre surgical infant orthodontics. The clinical examination of the cleft child is nicely illustrated making it a go to manual for professionals in early career stage. The chapter on ethical considerations is a delightful read.
In all, this is an excellent instructive, highly illustrative reference text with for postdoctoral orthodontic students and specialist clinical orthodontists with an interest in cleft orthodontics and specialist clinical orthodontists with an interest in cleft care. The textbook is also a great resource for specialists from other specialities engaged in providing cleft care. It is definitely recommended reading.
